Irvine is classed as a new town, which is located within North Ayrshire. With an estimated population of over 40,000 residents, it is the biggest settlement within North Ayrshire, with Kilmarnock being the second.
Today, Irvine is most recognised for it being the residency of the famous poet, Robert Burns. Burns was known to have worked in a flax mill within Glasgow Vennel, which is open to public viewings and remains with the same furnishings and exterior as it did at the time of Robert Burns employment. Burns Street and Burns Crescent, both located in Irvine have been named after Robert Burns in his memory.
Irvine has it’s own shopping centre, the Rivergate which hosts a variety of stores including retail, pharmacy and food outlets. The Rivergate is a well-known building within Irvine, situated directly in the town centre. Surrounding the Rivergate is the high-street, which also hosts a variety of stores, mostly retail. There is also a fantastic eating experienced to be had within Irvine, with beautiful restaurants located all over the town, including on the harbour and town centre.
Irvine beach is a common attraction for residents and tourists when the weather permits, located within Irvines Harbour, a desired residential and tourist location. This beautiful stretch of golden sand and seas is also adjoined to Irvine Beach Park, with set in sand dunes and astonishing views of Arran and Aisla Craig. It has facilities including picnic sites, parking and toilets.
Home to a variety of buildings and sites, which are regularly attended by tourists and locals, there is always something to do. Irvine is easily accessible due to its convient transportation links. A railway station is situated at the west end of the town, which runs a main line to Glasgow. There is also a local bus network with frequent services to Ardrossan, Greenock, Kilmarnock, Ayr, Troon and Glasgow. Stagecoach Western buses provide local services throughout Ayrshire, including local bus runs and express services to Barrhead, Glasgow, Beith and Dalry.
