Irvine is classed as a new town, which is located within North Ayrshire. With an estimated population of over 40,000 residents, it is the biggest settlement within North Ayrshire, with Kilmarnock being the second.

Today, Irvine is most recognised for it being the residency of the famous poet, Robert Burns. Burns was known to have worked in a flax mill within Glasgow Vennel, which is open to public viewings and remains with the same furnishings and exterior as it did at the time of Robert Burns employment. Burns Street and Burns Crescent, both located in Irvine have been named after Robert Burns in his memory.

Irvine has it’s own shopping centre, the Rivergate which hosts a variety of stores including retail, pharmacy and food outlets. There is also a local bus network with frequent services to Ardrossan, Greenock, Kilmarnock, Ayr, Troon and Glasgow. Stagecoach Western buses provide local services throughout Ayrshire, including local bus runs and express services to Barrhead, Glasgow, Beith and Dalry.
