No mention of Kilmarnock could be complete without reference to Scotland's Bard - Rabbie Burns. During the Scottish Wars of Independence, one of Ayrshire's most famous sons, William Wallace, grew to national prominence and now thanks to 'Braveheart' is known throughout the world. it is thought that he was born in Riccarton, a suburb of modern Kilmarnock. The town developed and spread and it's industries are and have been down the years as varied as woollen and cotton mills, carpet weaving, manufacture of steam engines with the first Scottish steam railway to open from Kilmarnock to Troon, pie- making and of course, the internationally renowned Johnnie Walker Whisky. Kilmarnock Football Club has also done the town proud and recently built a state of the art Hotel and Conference Centre.
